MTU Aiken, a subsidiary of Tognum America Inc., announced plans in March for two new buildings and 20 added jobs. Construction continues on an administration center and research and development building with test cells for engines, said Gary Mason, a Tognum spokesman.

“It’s certainly going to significantly enhance our research and development capabilities,” Mason said. “It will be Tognum’s only test and research facility in North America.”

The plant opened two years ago in a 270,000-square-foot facility in the old SKF building in Sage Mill Industrial Park. The site was chosen because of its room for expansion.

“It turns out our business is growing, so we took advantage of this site,” Mason said.

The expansion of a Graniteville diesel-engine manufacturer is on track for completion by the end of the year.

makes propulsion systems and distributed energy systems based on diesel and gas engines, gas turbines and fuel cells. The products are used for military, marine, rail, agricultural, heavy industrial and power generation applications. The company initially invested $45 million in the facility, and the latest expansion adds $40 million.

Mason was not able to comment on the hiring process for the new positions. The plant employs about 250 people.

A new entrance off Bettis Academy Road and a parking lot have been completed as part of the expansion, he said.

The research and test facility will help improve existing engine products and develop new ones, Mason said.
