South Carolina’s industrial electric rates are the eighth-lowest in the United States, and lower than traditional manufacturing powers such as Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Texas, and Wisconsin; by comparison, South Carolina’s rates are even lower than its Southern neighbors, such as North Carolina, Tennessee, and Florida.

Both the Aiken Electric Co-operative and South Carolina Electric & Gas (SCE&G) provide electric services to Aiken and Edgefield counties, and both companies can offer dual feeds from different generation sources.

The City of Aiken’s water and sewer system has excess capacity available to support the needs of manufacturers and researchers; all industrial parks in Aiken and Edgefield have water and sewer service on-site. In Aiken, the Horse Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant, which serves three counties, provides regional wastewater service. The Sage Mill Industrial Park is capable of handling clients that use more than 2 million gallons of water per day (MGD). The system has 20 MGD of capacity immediately available; in addition, Aiken can expand the system to handle more than 40 MGD within two years to meet increased demand.

South Carolina’s industrial natural gas rates are superior to more than 30 other states, and Aiken and Edgefield offer ideal opportunities for companies that consider that resource as important in their business practices. SCE&G provides affordable and accessible natural gas coverage to all of the industrial parks in Aiken and Edgefield counties, and companies that draw more heavily on natural gas in their processes can benefit from the 6-inch high-pressure pipelines that serve Sage Mill Industrial Park and Edgefield County Industrial Park.

As the American business community becomes more dependent on Internet and e-mail usage to transmit information, individual companies are becoming more dependent on fiber-optic broadband access, which enables them to transmit larger amounts of information faster than ever before. Keeping with the pace of business, Aiken County has established a fiber-optic system that provides high-speed communication services to industrial parks, Aiken Technical College, USC-Aiken, Aiken County Public Schools, and various government entities. With this, Aiken County’s industrial park clients can now not only transmit larger amounts of information quickly and efficiently, but also train their employees from remote locations through videoconferencing and online seminars.
